Compounding has been a part of the pharmacy profession since the beginning of the trade. It is an established tradition combining the art and science of creating personalized medications. When a patient’s medical condition can not be treated with a mass produced medication, pharmacists have the ability to step in to find a unique delivery system or alternate form to help. At times a patient’s physical condition hinders them from being able to take a medication in the form that it is mass produced. Along with your physician’s prescription., compounding pharmacists are able to prepare a specific medication to meet the patient’s needs, for example, an elderly patient who is no longer able to swallow capsules can have their medication prepared in suspension or elixir form.
Medication compliance problems, from commercially produced medications, can often times be fixed by your compounding pharmacist. These can include the dosage form of the medication, commercially available dose is too high (as is often times the case in pediatric patients), allergies to a dye or filler that a commercial product uses, or simply flavoring a medication to make it more palatable.
We can enhance the taste, flavor, or color of medications. Custom flavoring is very useful in our veterinary and pediatric patients.
At Ace Medical Pharmacy, we are here to work closely with your physician to create custom dosage forms and alternate routes of administering the medication. At times an oral medication (such as medications used for muscle or neurological pain) can be prepared in topical form to avoid unwanted side effects in patients.
Often times a medication is no longer commercially manufactured not because it is deemed unsafe but because it is no longer profitable for the pharmacuitcal company producing it or there might be long term set back issues with manufacturing. With a physician’s prescription we are able to order raw ingredients in bulk and compound the particular dose needed to treat a patient’s condition.
